I have heard most of my life that the Bible has the command to "fear not" or "not be afraid" is in the Bible 365 times, one for every day of the year. The more I heard it the more I doubted it, but I didn't really have the interest, energy or resources to test the claim. This morning I did, this is what I found, I will put in the form of question and answers, just for the fun of it.

Is the command to “fear not” in the Bible 365 times?

No. Not even close.

Are there 365 verses that contain the words “fear” or  “afraid” with “not” in any context?

Nope. Again not even close.

So how many verses even contain those words?

223. But that contains ideas like “those who do not fear God” and just happen to have the words even if they are in different sentences.

Okay. How many verses are there then?

146. That is still a lot of verses, but 365 is a flat out lie.

How did you find this number?

I did a Logos Bible morphology search, that looks at the original languages, which isn’t altered by our English translations. My morphology search found 223 results on boolean phrase “fear AND not OR not AND afraid.”  Afterward I went through and read each one and deleted the verses that didn’t fit as discussed above.

What translation of the Bible did you search?

My search was off the original languages as discussed above, but my results are show below in the English Standard Version.

What are all the verses that tell us not to fear?

Thanks for asking, they are below. Just so you know the couple in bold are not explicit but should be included in the count, in my opinion. Enjoy!
