Does sin have any power over you?

Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness ; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. -Romans 6:11-14

Are you dead to sin? Does sin reign in your body? Does sin ever master over you?

I used to fight sin, I used to battle sin. I would try to fight and sometimes I might win, many times I would lose. It was always a struggle. Sin did reign in me, it wasn't always obvious, but sin controlled me, I never really controlled sin.

Recently everything changed. I now understand what Paul is saying in these verses, I never had before. Sin does not reign in me anymore. Sin is not a master over me. I am dead to sin and alive in Christ. I know that sounds cliche but it is true.

When sin approached me, I used to keep saying, "don't do this" or "don't think that". I attempted to slowly back away from sin as I faced it. That is not the picture that is true with me now. I have turned away from sin, I no longer face it, I am simply walking continually away from it. I am continually walking towards God and with God. Christ is living in me and I don't fight sin anymore. Christ reigns in me and is master over me. It is not I who lives but Him in me.

I do not pretend that I will not sin again, but when I do, it will be because I have turned around. I have already been forgiven, so rather than focusing on sin. I must then turn around, focus on God and continue walking.
