Fill in the blank: Jesus is my _______.

Fill in the blank: Jesus is my _______.
Did you fill in the blank with Savior or Lord? It is automatic for me to say Savior. I feel like that is what I have heard my whole life, from churches to books to music. What do you think is the picture of the Jesus in the New Testament?

Jesus is preached as Lord much more than Savior. The crazy thing for me is that if we look at the entire New Testament, the word Savior is only used 24 times. The word Lord is used 665 times. This is looking at the Greek word Kurios (Lord) vs. Soter (Savior).

If someone were to ask me what is my relationship to Jesus, in the past I would have referred to myself as saved. While this is true, should we not prioritize seeing our relationship as a follower? This has affected our theology. "Saved" gives us the mind set that we have arrived, we have obtained salvation. Isn't being a follower of our Lord, a much better and true picture? We are walking with Jesus, down the path of life.

It comes to mind that early "Christians" were described as followers of the Way. Dwell on this today and take some time to pray that you can start following Jesus as Lord. May He direct us and instruct us instead of us directing ourselves and then just simply asking God for help.

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. -Colossians 2:6-7
