"ANTI-DEVO" - Day 7 - Love motivated by grace

As we discussed yesterday, we are motivated by the grace of God, shown in Jesus. We are not loved because of what we do, but we do because we are loved.

For some this will beg the questions like: Do we have to do works to be saved? Does this mean everyone gets eternal life? Can I do whatever I want and still be saved?

If you didn't read yesterday's post do so now. Our actions need not be motivated by religion or requirement, but by love. This is the command that Jesus does give those who want to follow Him.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love." -John 15:9-10 (Also check out Matt 22:36-40)

This passage comes in the context of Jesus' analogy of Him being the vine and we are the braches. As we remain connected to Him, He will work in and through us and we will bear fruit. If we disconnect and do things by our own strength, we will not bear fruit. When this happens we stop following Jesus as Lord. This is the largest problem I think we face in Christianity.

This brings me to where I want t
o address  one last point. For too long I believed in Jesus but did not follow Him as Lord. I believed all the right things but that intellectual knowledge did not motivate me to follow Him. I did not stay truly connected. I don't see how I really was a Christian, because I was not a follower of Christ.

Jesus addressed the people who lived the way I used to live with this:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" -Matthew 7:21-23 ESV

I believe I was one of those people. I called Him Lord, but I didn't not follow. We need to do what He says if we actually follow Him or He will say, "Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?" (Luke 6:46 also read 6:47-49 )

In conclusion how should we live now?
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” -Luke 10:25-28 ESV
