Billy Graham and the Religious Right

"It would disturb me if there was a wedding between religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." -Billy Graham

Have you ever seen this quote? I have several times, yet, I could never find it in its context. All I knew was that its reference was the February 1, 1981 issue of Parade. After talking to many librarians, I finally tracked down the only place known to have this 35-year-old article: the University of North Carolina's Chapel Hill Library. You can't imagine how excited I was when I received an email today that Sarah Carrier, the Research and Instruction Librarian at Chapel Hill, had scanned it for me!

What makes this article so great? Billy Graham was the poster child of the religious right before the Watergate scandal. In this article he clearly explains why he wanted nothing to do with the Church compromising its mission by getting involved with politics. I do hope that the modern Americanized Church can gain a similar clarity that Billy Graham gained over three decades ago.

As you will see, the context is quite amazing. Not only do we have Billy Graham, but Jerry Falwell, President Nixon, President Reagan, Communism, and so much more. I hope you enjoy!

  1. When I initially commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Thank you! facebook login
